How to scan and identify a sports card
A clear front photo can identify many cards, but the back often confirms the exact year, set, card number, and printing.
Before taking the picture
- Remove glare and use bright, even light.
- Place the full card on a plain contrasting background.
- Keep the phone directly above the card and wait for focus.
- Photograph the back whenever the front does not confirm the exact printing.
Details that can change value
Check the year, manufacturer, set, player, card number, rookie designation, parallel name, refractor finish, autograph, memorabilia, serial number, short print, and condition. A visually similar base card may have a very different value from its numbered or refractor parallel.
Card matches and prices are informational estimates. Confirm the exact card and recent comparable sales before buying, selling, insuring, or grading.
